Fun Fact

The name Space Dragon comes from our first year Uni teacher's default example of scope creep. He'd say 'but what if we added Space Dragons and Starships to it?' as an example of someone creeping the scope of a project.

That saying stuck with us, lodged deep in the brain, so when we  were naming our company a reminder of the dangers of scope creep was a fun little callback and a poignant reminder for us.

ProfilePicTrev.png

Trev is a Lead Technical Artist and Tools Programmer with a passion for shaders, pipeline automation and making things feel juicy and responsive. Nothing in the world feels better than making a tool that you know will save countless hours, or automating the pain points out of someone's workflow so they can concentrate on the parts that really matter.

Also shaders, because shaders are pretty and fun.

Space Dragon is a team of two kickass Aussie game developers striking out on their own to make the card game they've been wanting to make for the last decade and a half.

ProfilePicJack.png

Jack is a Lead Animator and 3D Artist who loves making monsters, whether they are cute, strange or terrifying. He specialises in creating non-destructive and fast-iteration workflows for characters, environments and animation, as well as creating bespoke rigging solutions for non-standard characters.

Truly breathing life into something impossible is why he does what he does, and he loves every second of it.

Together, Jack and Trev have (almost) all areas of game dev covered (lookin at you Audio) and are currently proving that with the development of RocketCard Defence, a genre mashup of Roguelike Card games and Tower Defence games, two genres we're both passionate about.

We're also available for hire! If your team needs Tech Art, Animation, VFX, Pipeline or just general game dev support, reach out to us! More info on that down below.

Fun Fact

Despite whats shown in the pictures of us here on the site, in real life we actually do have facial features! And better beards! These pics are old ones.

Fun Fact

RocketCard Defence is also the test run for the modular framework Code Blocks that Trev has been building for a few years now. This being our first project with it, we're building and expanding on the framework to suit this specific genre mashup.

We're planning to continue making games in this space, and by reusing the framework we'll be able to achieve a larger scope for our next project.

RocketCard Defence

Rocketcard Defence combines the tactical elements of Tower Defence games with the strategic elements of Roguelite Deckbuilders. Over the course of a run, you construct a deck of cards that allow you to build powerful fortifications, cards that construct support buildings and cards that interact with the deck in unique ways. We're combining two genres that we love, along with a retro-futurist art style, a uniquely Australian sense of humour.

In Rocketcard Defence, you take control of an interdimensional mining rig in space. Your job is to lure crystalline aliens through portals into our universe, and then protect your mining rig as you extract their otherworldly energies. Much like the real world though, your mining takes a toll on the delicate ecosystem and the longer you play the more apparent it becomes that your employer only cares for profits.

We're working at the intersection of two genres that we personally love and we have some top notch ideas on where to take this project.

Screenshots here are super duper early pre-alpha art tests and at the time of grabbing these screenshots we'd been working on the project for maybe three weeks. Our game will be at least 3 times as cool looking as this. At least!

Fun Fact

Jack and Trev have been working together on and off for over 15 years now

The most recent thing we've worked on together was over at Creature on the MR title Starship Home. Its a fun, goopy scifi adventure about caring for plants and saving the galaxy.

This was also the third game we'd made together about growing plants, which is neat!

Heres a link to the trailer

Teams we've worked with over the years

Not the skills you're looking for?

Our team is ready to scale!

We have a handful of people who we can bring on board with less than a weeks notice, and another handful with only a few weeks notice. Every one of them is either senior or lead level in their respective discipline, and each of them are excellent human beings who we've worked with before.

We're keen to get them on the team, they're keen to be here, we're just too early-days with Space Dragon to have the dream team already assembled. If you need an extra skillset or an extra pair of hands though, chances are we got you covered and that'll give us the excuse to get them on board.

Fun Fact

Jack and Trev both have teaching backgrounds, having taught 3d art and animation, and game design respectively. We'll upskill your team, not as a service or anything, just because we love teaching people cool stuff!
